Climb the church tower of Saint-Gengouxle-National, 12C Romanesque church modified in the 16C, and admire the superb view over the medieval town. Or perhaps you would prefer to climb to the top of the nearby Mont Goubot.

Go on a retreat at Taizé
Short of a full week-long retreat in the ecumenical community open to all (prayer, religious discussion, etc.), you can always visit the shop where the books, pottery and paintings produced by the monks are on display.

Discover the religious Burgundy of the abbots of Cluny and admire the remains of the famous abbey which was the largest church in Christendom from the 10th to the 13th century. Founded in the year 910, the Benedictine abbey of Cluny once stood at the head of over a thousand monasteries and exercised an extraordinary influence over western Europe throughout the Middle Ages.

Work up a good sweat... in preparation for Europe’s longest tunnel open to a voie verte: it takes 6 to 8 minutes to cycle through the Bois Clair. Your reward on the other side: the spectacular feudal castle of Berzé-le-Chatel.

Search for authenticity in the little villages of the Mâconnais (Berzé, La Roche-Vineuse, Prissé, etc.): winegrowers’ houses with galleries, dovecotes, little Romanesque churches, washhouses, etc. – all built from the ochre stone which gives the landscape its characteristic gentle luminosity.

Romantic nostalgia is the theme of this 70 km route as we explore the country which inspired some of Alphonse de Lamartine’s most famous poems. We travel from the museum housed in the family home in Mâcon to the poet’s endearing house of Milly, by way of the châteaux of Monceau, (Pi e r re c l o s ) and Saint-Point. An instructive and moving excursion in the steps of a great poet.

Walk to the top of the hill, like so many others before you, and visit the museum which traces the site’s prehistoric adventure.

Mâcon: southern gateway of Burgundy
Mâcon’s rich urban and architectural heritage bears testimony to a town steeped in history. The “Parcours Patrimonial” (Heritage Trail) takes you through the cobblestone streets, from Old Saint-Vincent to the Hôtel-Dieu, from the Maison de Bois (Half-Timbered House) to the Chapelle Soufflot, not forgetting the museums along the way that bring the town’s past back to life. When evening falls, the Pont Saint-Laurent and the embankments of the Saône are bathed in light.
